US rifles loaned to other nations were to be returned to US inventory when no longer needed. Some of the US rifles that were returned were redistributed to other nations. Nations that bought US rifles or received them for free often sold them to other countries and/or civilian arms dealers.
and which US programs provided them can be seen by clicking the link below.
Nations that received American rifles
Over the years since World War II, many American rifles were imported into the United States and sold by private importers who bought them from other countries. Private importers also imported and sold American rifles in many other countries. In the US, most of them were purchased at retail by citizens. Some were purchased by law enforcement agencies and then sold to citizens or businesses that sold them to citizens. The ability to import US rifles for sale to civilians has been affected at various times by federal legislation and/or the internal rules of the agency responsible for accounting for imported firearms, the Department of State from USA
"Import" signs.
The Gun Control Act of 1968 was signed into law by President Johnson on October 22, 1968. [18 U.S.C. 925(d)]. Among the many regulations was a requirement that henceforth all imported firearms be clearly marked with the name of the importing company and the city and state in which the company was located. The law did not explain the use of abbreviations or where the designations should be located. This was eventually clarified somewhat by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) rules, which were also created under the Gun Control Act of 1968. Imported firearms, which do not bear an importer, were imported into the US before October 1968 US rifles sold to private US companies by the US Department of Defense, sold by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) US Army or supplied by the US Army to DCM's successor, TheCivilian Marksmanship Program (CMP)They do not have importer marks.
US import brand carbines are generally priced 20-30% less than non-import brand rifles. In some cases, the import mark can help determine where the rifles were imported from, since several importers only imported from a specific country as a single event.
Where to look for the import mark and what it looks like
Most importers placed markings on the barrel in front of the stock. However, traces of import were found on the barrel under the stock/forend or somewhere on the receiver. They can be anywhere in the barrel or anywhere in the receiver. There was no standard location or orientation.
The name of the importer can be the full name, abbreviation or initials. The city can be filled in or shortened. Stan is usually initials.
A variety of methods have been used to place the markings on the carabiner, including hand engraving, machine engraving, or die stamping. The stamped information can be stamped by hand or machine, individual letters at a time or in a group.
This information applies to US carbines only and should not be considered complete.
